Checks You Need To Make On Your Car Before You Set Off On A Long Journey

Simply put, long car journeys put more stress on cars than short ones. Little problem areas that you might have with your run-around can not even show up or a cause any driving problems if you only usually do short trips in your car.

However, if you know that you are going to be driving a much longer distance than usual, some checks need to be made. Not only will this mean you are travelling more safely, but it will minimise the risk of a breakdown and all of the hassle and cost that ensues.

Check Your Battery

Short trips put excessive amounts of strain on a battery. Only driving for a few miles at a time can mean that the battery wears down. Of course, a long journey can be just what a battery needs and will replenish it, but if you have not checked it recently you might just find that it is approaching the end of its life and in need of replacement – the last thing you want to face miles from home.

According to the AA, a process known as sulphation can occur when a battery is underused. This causes a build up on the electrical plates of the battery which reduces the ability of it to hold charge. If yours has this problem, a long journey with the lights and air-con on could lead to a total failure. Check before you set off.

Tyre Wear

Before setting off on a long journey it is highly advisable to inflate your tyres to the recommended level. This will help you drive more efficiently and improve the car’s ability to grip the road. However, you should also check for wear and tear.

As per Point S, the car tyre specialists, incorrect wheel alignment can lead to excessive wear on one side of the tyre or the other. So, when you inflate take the time to check for differing amounts of wear on either side of the tyre. In addition, you should have your tyres checked for bulges or cracks, after regular intervals

Screen Wash

Don’t forget to fill up on screen wash. During short journeys around town, you may hardly ever need to wipe your screen. However, when travelling at higher speeds on the motorway debris hitting the screen and restricting your view is much more commonplace.

Top up with screen wash before you need it and have to pull over to buy some. It may be too late by the time you reach the next service station.
