Memories of Cornwall
My favourite area of the UK has to be, without doubt, the South West. It was one of the many reasons that we moved to Somerset almost 3 years ago. My most favourite area down here though, has to be Cornwall.
There is something magical about the most south-westerly part of Britain. The scenery is spectacular, the roads are narrow and the history is in abundance.There are hundreds of sandy beaches, culminating at the famous Land’s End. The south coast, also known as the Cornish Riviera, includes picturesque harbour villages like Fowey and Falmouth. I can remember visiting Cornwall as a child. I really did not enjoy the journey but, once we had reached our destination, it didn’t matter. The location was too beautiful to hold a grudge!
One of my favourite memories was visiting the Hotel Kontiki in Newquay. We travelled there with my family (there were 7 of us at the time). They had a swimming pool and it was just a short walk from the beach. There was a disco dancing competition one evening and I can distinctly remember winning. My prizes were a cup – which I still have – and £5 which I used to buy a book on dancing by Arlene Phillips. I was determined that was what I wanted to be when I was older!
Growing up, I took more holidays in Cornwall. I enjoyed the beaches in Bude and in fact, they were crowned Winner of Best UK Coastal Resort at the 2015 British Travel Awards. I can also remember the best seafood restaurant in Port Isaac – which I am determined to get back to one day.
More recently, Ross, Grace and I visited Polperro with our friends Cathie, Lec and Lucas. We had just spent a wonderful weekend with Forest Holidays and this little fishing village was just a short drive away. The town was beautiful. Walking through the narrow streets felt like we were being taken back in time.
