Bluebells at Blackbury Camp, Devon
On Good Friday, we visited Blackbury Camp in Southleigh, Devon. We had originally planned to take a picnic to Little Orchard Alpacas near Axminster. They were holding an Easter Egg hunt and, because they hadn’t anticipated the amount of people who would show up, they had run out of space – and Easter Eggs – by 12pm.
Their loss was Blackbury Camps gain though – and what a gain it was! The bluebells were out in full force and we sat and ate our lunch surrounded by the beautiful sight and scent of these stunning blue blooms.
About Blackbury Camp
Blackbury Camp is a hillfort built during the 4th Century BC and used by Iron Age tribal people, probably for several hundred years.
It is owned by English Heritage and is free to enter. It is situated within a wooded area which can be uneven and muddy during certain times of the year.
There is a small, free car park on site. It was really busy when we were there so many people were parking on the road too. Dogs are allowed on leads.
Bluebells at Blackbury Camp
There are plenty of bluebells to be found at Blackbury Camp. These usually appear during late spring and carpets of them grow both inside and outside the fort area. The colours and smells are both beautiful.
Our Experience at Blackbury Camp
Rex had a whale of a time! He couldn’t quite get the fact that his mum, dad and sister were sitting down on the ground eating their lunch and was alternating between sitting down with us and running around with his food in his hand.
At one point he plonked himself down in the middle of a host of bluebells to sit and eat his Jaffa Cake. Once finished, he got up to see a small dog running around. He is often in fits of giggles when he sees them and this occasion was no exception.
Once we had eaten, and made sure we had collected up all of our rubbish, we walked a bit further outside of the fort. It was a beautiful day and there were plenty of views to be found.
Rex had never seen a real-life bee before. He had experienced them on the television. It was extremely excited to see one buzzing around the grass.
The only slight drawback is the lack of toilets, so we had to leave earlier than anticipated. It did give us the perfect excuse to nip into the nearby seaside town of Beer! We made sure to pick up an ice cream in the process!
